2007 Favourites Continued: 2

65daysofstatic – The destruction of small ideas (Monotreme)

Probably the most anticipated album for me in 2007. Not disappointing but also not their best.

It seems not so many post rockers are sticking their quiet-loud-quiet epic legacy any more. Mogwai is a good proof. Songs are more concentrated and more straight forward to bring ‘best moments/peaks’, which normally come after a lengthy build-up (I have to confess that I am actually very old-fashioned about this, and the elite of classic post-rock reside here). In this album, 65days didn’t drop the pattern though, but most of the time they compartmentalised each song. In another word, we saw a quiet-loud-quiet-loud-quiet-loud…pattern emerged. It is interesting the new movement is just like what Godspeed You Black Emperor! did in Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven seven years ago, but more concentrated. Coincidently, Explosions In The Sky is experimenting a similar path (even similarly giving piano an bright spot) in their 2007 new release which is another one failed to match my expectation despite of the overwhelming public praise.

Anyway, 65days is in a transformation from hot blood youth to…? We will see…
