08年年度总结才过不足三月,有营养的声音又已积累了不少;想想去年大概150张CD左右食量也算是历史新高,无奈网上还有400多张海量的高人,不禁唏嘘片刻。不过生活从来不拒绝好的声音,所以,就尽管来得更猛烈些吧。先要感叹一下leak的强大。从新年伊始的Telefon Tel Aviv, Balmorhea到最近的Mono, The Appleseed Cast, Starsailor和George Dorn Screams的新专,让人觉得2009很光明,有前途。Balmorhea和George Dorn Sceams属于尚待开发的潜力股,认知不深, 那就从TTA开始。如果要说独一无二的电子音乐,TTA是我当仁不让的选择。在Youtube上看过一段简单的video,摄像机对着音响,里面传来的是TTA的音乐。这听上去实在像是无聊人的无聊之举,但如果你看到音响舞动的频率,就会明白些其中的道理。那标志性的beat带来的震撼,像是…雨滴溅入明镜般的湖面?这个太诗意太温柔;呵呵,就像一拳打在你的胸口,叫你好久都喘不过气来。《Immolate Yourself》里一曲Helen of Troy,足以代表TTA向流行电子新方向的开拓。日本的Mono现在是越来越大牌,动静相得益彰且和弦乐珠联璧合,《Hymn To The Immortal Wind》注定又是一篇史诗。The Appleseed Cast在2003年的一曲Fight Song让我记住了他们,也认识了Emo,不过奇怪的是其之后的作品都被莫名忽略了。《Sagarmatha》在今天(17/02/09)以几乎全器乐的形式现世,觉得其实并不Emo,也不后摇,倒更像钉鞋和迷幻摇滚,充满了迷人的空间感。最后还剩下Starsailor。不知不觉《All The Plans》已经是他们第四张专辑。Starsailor每出一张专辑,对他们的喜爱就减少一分。《Love Is Here》不知什么时候就快变成Love is where了。好在新曲Tell Me It’s Not Over,Hurts Too Much, Stars And Stripes还是给了我很多的信心,我心中的英式大旗还是要交给他们扛好。。。

就在刚才,惊然发现Telefon Tel Aviv的半壁江山Charles Cooper刚刚于1月22日英年早逝,仅仅31岁…对TTA的钟爱无需多言,有的只是惋惜。除了衷心祈祷在最近离开人世的人们都能一路走好之外,我能做的就是打开唱机,塞进《Map Of What Is Effortless》by Telefon Tel Aviv,然后闭眼倾听…Godspeed you…





Jersey - A Trip Without Itinerary

Jersey的音乐,是闭上耳朵睡着了都可以听到的那一种。

去年12月的某个寒冷的晚上,无意中打开了Jersey的官方网站,之后的10分钟,我没有再做任何事情。闭上眼睛,像在一个时间凝固的世界里,让思绪随着那短短二十秒钟的吉他音符回旋往复,慢慢迷失。在官网的首页上,新专辑已于十月发行的消息赫然在列。这一切来得有点悄然无息,原以为只是一个临时Side-project,三年之后却也默默迎来了第二张出品。记得07年在伦敦西北部The Luminaire看Saroos时,同为Jersey吉他手的Florian Zimmer对即使伦敦这样音乐资讯发达的地方也有人拥有Jersey的专辑了解Jersey的歌声仍然感到惊讶,可见他们的低调和朴实。

北到柏林,南至慕尼黑和魏茵海姆,Marion Gerth (ex-Fred is Dead), Andreas Haberl (The Notwist, Andromeda Mega Express Orchestra), Max Punktezahl (The Notwist, Contriva), Noel Rademacher (Noël) and Florian Zimmer (Saroos, Iso68),五个各自忙碌的德国乐手为了共同的音乐理念,也为了不拘泥于传统独立吉他音乐/独立电子的写作方式而走在了一起。所以在很多时候,Jersey的叙事方式是纯器乐式的,或者人声会在很晚的时候才加入乐曲并被当作另外一件乐器来使用,这在形式上和精神上都和Post-Rock有异曲同工之妙。当然,Jersey本质上还是吉他流行乐队,明亮悦耳的吉他声中总会有那么一段闯入你内心最脆弱的部分,然后毫无抵抗的把你感动。个人认为其纯器乐曲都非常出彩,无论是2005同名首专的开篇“Southwestern”,“1435”,结尾“Sleep On Souvenirs”,还是2008年新专Itinerary起始让人无比激动的“Moondial”和点题曲“Itinerary”,心情很容易就跟着并不复杂的吉他、电子音符腾空而起漂向远处。Noel Rademacher的声音也是同样吸引人的。没有复杂的歌词和高难度的发音,他胜似闲庭信步般的声音有机地和音乐结合在一,相辅相成,这在“Boy With A Rifle”,“Dark Line”或“Touch The Ground”等曲目中表现得淋漓尽致。尤其是这最后一曲,2006年它只作为7”发行时,恨不得当时立刻去买一台7”唱机。

总是幻想着,一个个冬日,柏林露天的咖啡桌旁,Noel在慵懒的夕阳下缓缓地用温暖的声音歌唱着,“Not young enough to be innocent, not old enough to be wise…”

2008 Rewind

2008 has been a bizarre and unforgettable year for many. The number ‘8’ represents prosperity in China, but it’s somehow sarcastic as we flash back the memories. Thinking of music industry, high street chains and independent record shops are fighting hard to maintain the ever shrinking market segments. I bet they know themselves there is not much can be done with it: for the same album, where are you going to get it if Zavii sells it for £13, HMV for £12, FOPP for £11, and Amazon for £9?

Then it won’t be so astonishing that Zavii went into administration just a few days before Christmas and its appointed administrator Ernst & Young is looking for a buyer. Well I don’t know whether a ‘kind-hearted’ buyer will emerge eventually but I do know Virgin boss Sir Richard Branson was wise enough to sell the music branch Virgin Megastore to Zavii which feels the pain now.

Looking at the bright side, musicians still dedicate to what they love and their music is ever inspiring. 10 years on, I am still listening.

Giving my favourites records rankings seems like a mission impossible. How am I supposed to know my No.06 is definitely better than No.07? Well I think I will put it into subjectivity, and it is not something substantial but spiritual. It is not about rankings but recording, and that’s why I still make lists. It’s like your diary which becomes your greatest treasure when you go over them again after 10 years, 20 years, or even longer…

(I didn’t include the records which haven’t been listened to but I’m fairly confident they will be on the top of my list, such as new albums from Sigur Rós, Mogwai, Jersey, EF, 超级市场, 惘闻, 果味VC)

毋庸置疑,Maybeshewill是2008年对我来说最响亮的名字,一首title track ‘Not for Want of Trying’ 很轻易地成为今年听得最多的歌曲。Post-Rock今后的发展,很大程度上要看他们和65daysofstatic的走向了。[Also see here]

如果说Maybeshewill走的是创新融合之路,那Pg.Lost就是传统Post-Rock的忠实守卫者。有人说Pg.Lost很暴力,我倒觉得那是激情毫无掩饰的流露。谈笑间,瑞典Post-Rock接过英美前辈的衣钵,加以传承。

[06] B. Fleischmann - Angst Is Not A Weltanschauung! (Morr 2008)
已经有一年多的时间没有认真听过Morr Music的音乐了。曾经的Indie Electronic圣殿向Indie Rock/Electro Pop的转变也让人有点始料不及。B. Fleischmann继年初Duo 505的新专之后,在年底交出了在Morr大家庭里的第四份家庭作业 (也可以是第五或第六,看你怎么数或者在不在乎了),同样完成了从sound-writing到song-writing的转变。熟悉的groovebox之声仍旧可以找到,但这次的主旋律是vocal的构架和故事的描述,甚至他自己也出来吼上两首。无论你是B. Fleischmann的歌迷还是Daniel Johnston的老友,‘Phones, Machines, and King Kong’都是不可错过的;而‘24. 12.’就像一个没有结尾的电影,让人回味一遍又一遍。不能说我怀念B. Fleischmann过去Post-Rock构架似的电子小品,就像他说的 ---- 我们幸运地,用记忆塞满城堡,并保证时间不会找到开启大门的钥匙。。。

[07] Iso68 - Space Frames (Pingipung 2008)
差一点就错过的声音,而且是如果错过了一定会后悔的那种。总觉得Iso68和Alian Transistor门下的Saroos很相似 (或者Tied + Tickled Trio),令人怦然心动的德国电子爵士。Weilheim Scene的力量果然不小,当然The Notwist也逃脱不了干系。

Maybeshewill 用仅仅2首曲目10分钟的时间再一次证明他们的才华不是昙花一现,而同僚Her Name Is Calla也增添了些许异色。

虽然Nell的音乐越来越像流行靠拢,但偶尔响起的暴戾的吉他声还是能让人兴奋一把。也许这就是成名的代价,被大众所接受的代价。这是人之常情,大概连Sigur Rós也不能幸免。关于Nell的长篇大论留到以后,希望他们能找回‘Let It Rain’时期的年少轻狂。

1st Anniversary

Just after a blink, it's been a year. It hasn't been the best year personally, but at least this blog survives, with countable updates (Orz). Really want to thank those few of my readers, for the understanding and support. I will keep things up...

The Notwist Live @ ULU London

回想六年来看过的33场演唱会,如果再给我一次机会重新体验其中的某一场,我想答案一定会是The Notwist。不是因为他们很少来伦敦,也不是因为这张门票来得颇为曲折;如果你体会过那种激动,那种从后脑勺到脊椎不由自主麻木并紧缩似的激动,你一定会明白我在说什么。而且这种感觉不是转瞬即逝,they stay, anyway。

很早就来到ULU(University of London Union),当然这个属于UCL(University College London)的地盘里并没人关心The Notwist的到来。九点半,当Acher兄弟终于站在镁光灯下的时候,门外的寒风和冰雹早就被抛到了九霄云外。‘Boy was wrong/was wrong in every cast/was always told that make up/would make things last’,一开场,Markus那看似轻描淡写不经意的声音和歌词,转瞬间就抓住了所有人最细微最敏感的神经,把心情按钮从等待换成感动。看不到奇装异服(Markus和Martin看起来都很像大学教授,而且是搞科研的那种^^),看不到眩目的灯光效果,看不到任何摇滚明星的架子,The Notwist以德国有特有的严谨和朴实,诠释着他们的音乐理念。从95年的‘12’到今年的‘The Devil, You + Me’,The Notwist演奏了13年4张专辑里的众多曲目;‘Pilot’,‘Gloomy Planets’,‘Off The Rails’,‘Gravity’,‘One With The Freaks’,‘Good Lies’;第一次,我会哼唱出每一首曲子。十几首曲目,不经意间就结束。除了音乐声和欢呼声,你会看到Markus的小碎步,Micha的Bass‘肚皮舞’。还有Martin Gretschmann,他摆弄着有趣的声控装置,就像拿着Wii游戏手柄的淘气孩子。第二次encore,对,第二次,只有一首歌适合给这场演出画上完美的休止符,‘Consequence’。不禁侧过头看了看旁边独自前来的英国高个青年,刚才聊天的时候他告诉我,如果唱‘Consequence’的时候看到我的眼泪不要笑我。仍旧是那effortless的温暖歌声,我没有看见眼泪,我只看见埋住脸庞的双手。

演出结束后在门外碰见Micha和Martin,不禁对他们来中国演出发出邀请(如果我有这个权利的话…XD…),Micha说当然,他很期待。听说我很遗憾错过了他们沉寂已久之后六月在英国的首场演出后,Micha告诉我他更喜欢今天的演出,因为上一次声音上出了很多问题;顿时想起了Marcus演唱时的微笑。突然间,觉得错过的,并不一定是最好的。

看看手表,不知不觉已经接近凌晨。一个人蜷缩在车站的一角,头脑一片空白。当No.168疾速穿过Strand,驶上Waterloo Bridge,不禁发觉已经很久没有享受过伦敦的夜色。其实伦敦的夜还是很可爱的,尤其是在这个被看不见的沮丧和无奈统治的时期,更加难能可贵。

听说明天会下雪。不冷。也许,那是从德国吹来的寒冷暖流。

Formed near Munich as a post-hardcore band, The Notwist gradually began to embrace a fusion of classic '80s indie pop songwriting and scruffy electronic backings indebted to Oval and Autechre. The quartet is comprised of brothers Markus and Micha Acher (on vocals/guitar and bass, respectively) plus programmer/keyboard player Martin Gretschmann and drummer Martin Messerschmid. Their self-titled 1989 debut and 1992's Nook were rough-and-tumble punk LPs. Third album 12 marked the group's first flirtation with electronics, though the chord structures and vocals of Markus Acher marked The Notwist more as an alternative band. The band then gained an American distribution deal with Zero Hour, and after 12 was reissued, fourth album Shrink — almost entirely abstract electronic in nature — appeared in 1998. Neon Golden (2002) and The Devil, You + Me (2008) were both song-oriented in nature, albeit with electronics continuing to play a significant role in the band's material.

不知道从什么时候开始,已经很难认真把一张专辑从第一分钟听到最后一秒,在洗净尘埃的夜里,以声音为世界中心的状态。不是好听入耳的音乐变少了,而是耳朵被娇惯坏了,心态变了。就像看一部电影,只看一半或是只看高潮,感觉就像吃快餐面,速战速决,吃着味道肚子饱了有没有营养健不健康倒也无所谓了。所以当The Devil, You + Me最后一个音符在耳边轻轻划过时,心里出奇的平静。

1989年,在德国南部靠近慕尼黑的小城魏茵海姆(Weilheim),Markus (吉他/主唱) 和Micha (贝司) Acher兄弟加上鼓手Martin Messerschmid (他后来被Andi Haberl取代)组建了这支叫做The Notwist的Post-Hardcore乐队。在电子乐专家Martin Gretschmann加入乐队之前,乐队的前两张专辑The Notwist (1990)和Nook (1992)是纯粹的Punk音乐,暴烈,粗糙。从12 (1995)开始,乐队开始尝试在音乐中加入适量的抽象实验电子元素 (类似于Oval和Autechre)。第四张专辑Shrink (1998) 是一张爵士电子摇滚实验,而The Notwist的独立电子流行化在Neon Golden (2002)发行后达到顶峰。这是一张让挑剔的英美媒体(当然不是主流媒体)也蛰伏的专辑,足以看作界定Indie Electronic这个近年来风行音乐类型的里程碑。Neon Golden虽然在City Slang发行,但其实质更接近于德国独立电子花园Morr Music宿以追求的境界。新专辑The Devil, You + Me终于在今年五月浮出水面。听第一遍并没有让人惊艳的感觉。但这正是其魅力所在,随着每一次的聆听,理解和共鸣就增加一分。因为The Notwist的音乐是复杂的,其随意的外衣下隐藏的是天才的矜持。和Andromeda Mega Express Orchestra的合作实现了他们一直想和管弦乐队合作的愿望。专辑的歌词里也更多地提及了mortality, planetary motion, gravity,这其中并没有很深奥的哲学意义。如Markus所说,‘I wanted the lyrics to be kind of like a broken mirror, so you could reflect on everything from different angles’。如果你期待的是另一张Neon Golden似的专辑,你肯定是失望的。欢快的实验电子节拍不见了,取而代之的是人到中年的深情与温柔,和对年轻时代叛逆与激情的怀念。这张专辑,我更愿意看作是他们对近20年音乐生涯的总结。

6年的时间,The Notwist交出了答案,一份略微出乎意料但令人满意的答案。看来很多乐队都喜欢玩时间游戏,Sparklehorse的Dreamt For Light Years In The Belly Of A Mountain让我们等了5年,Bark Psychosis隔了10年才磨出第2张专辑Codename:Dustsucker,更不用提My Bloody Valentine传说中的Loveless后续之作,18年后还是雾里看花。慢工出细活,大多数时间磨出来的,的确都是优之良品。不过等待是痛苦的。好在Micha Acher亲口告诉我,下张专辑应该不用再等6年了。

Just An Illusion – October Sound

Definite the best electronic album I’ve heard this year, and due to the fact that it was released by the less known Austria label Konkord back in January I wasn’t aware of its existence until mid-October (even can hardly seen any English review about this album Orz…). Having released the first album ‘Late’ in 2004 as a collaborative side project, Duo 505 consists of Morr Music’s first signing, Austrian original recording and electronic artist Bernhard Fleischmann, and multi-instrumentalist Herbert Weixelbaum. For long I’ve been a huge fan of B.Fleischmann’s solo works, which are indie electronic/IDM music buried with Post-Rock spirit. ‘Another Illusion’ is not far from that familiar convention – substantive drum beats, persistent chiptune, needless to say the beloved Mc-505 Groovebox – with the extra hands of Mr. Weixelbaum. However the tunes are extremely well produced that it sounds eternal. If have to pick one song to represent the whole, I will say it’s the 3rd song ‘Just An Illusion’. Adding the effortless female vocal to the formula, you can’t ask for more.

The sound of ‘Another Illusion’ stays all around my head for days. Sometime, you can’t resist the temptation to dance with it, even if the music isn’t made for dance lovers at all. Who cares? ‘Oh plz don turn da music down, even if I dont dance 2nite…’

惘闻 (Wang Wen) - RE:RE:RE (长坂坡文化 2006)
If we say Chinese rock/indie music is still in its infancy, then Wang Wen must be one of the most grown ones. The others include 超级市场 (Supermarket) for electronic and Super VC (果味 VC) for Brit/guitar pop.

Formed a decade ago in the Northern seaport Dalian, Wang Wen spent 10 years to release 4 proper albums and gained huge fan base among Chinese listeners. Shortly after the release of ‘IV’, their latest output, they even had the first even European tour to spread the influence and it was well recognised. Drawing influence from those famous PR bands such as Mogwai, Mono, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, they knew very few things about Post-Rock and didn’t have a clue they were heading to the Post-Rock territory. ‘RE:RE:RE:’ is their second album and it’s a completely mind-blower. Here you find the best of PR: patient build up and epic explosion, and track like ‘最后的麻山' also caught the emerging trend of Electronic PR. Similar to those epic PR bands, there is always unseen sadness hiding inside the tracks, making you think and overwhelming you.

Haven’t got the time to consume the latest releases, but I’m very confident that Wang Wen has already stepped into maturity. It’s a silly comparison, but Wang Wen for mainland is like 甜梅号 (Sugar Plum Ferry) for Taiwan that a PR dream for many to fulfill and to proud.

Takagi Masakatsu (高木正勝) - COIEDA (W + K Tokyo Lab 2004)
Have to say its colourful painting sleeve was the prime attraction to listen to ‘COIEDA’.
Actually Takagi Masakatsu has come to my attentions for years because of his presence in Karaoke Kalk label as a sound/visual artist. The music surely wasn’t disappointing with the track 5 ‘Exit/Delete’ as the highlight featuring David Sylvian’s vocal.

The sleeve design for all Takagi’s works has been phenomenal, and most of them are by Saeko Takagi, so check it out.

Death Note

死神爱吃苹果。

Death Note。如果真有这样一本黑色死亡笔记摆在面前,你有勇气使用它吗?估计绝大多数人都会像我一样,甚至缺少去触摸它的勇气。当然不排除还有一种尝到邪恶的甜头,恣意妄为的人。Death Note 电影动画这几年掀起的热潮自不必说,漫画单行本在日本就有2100万的销量。理所当然,它在国内被完美的和谐了。阴谋邪恶贪婪报复孤独无奈失望自大,种种的黑暗因子赤裸裸得可怕,但这正是DN耀眼的地方。总觉得夜神月和Code Geass里的鲁路修很像,都是天资过人,被现世所埋没但抓住一个机会就会很耀眼的人。同样‘‘天真’’的动机,同样的冰冷无情,同样曾经站在某个理想世界的最顶端,但最后得到的,几乎是一样天妒英才的命运。当然月走得有些无奈,鲁路修的死亡本身都还是他自己撰写的剧本。两人的成长道路和经历难免被打上过于理想化的烙印,但是人家好歹拼死努力过。。。

其实DN很早之前就看过,现在把它再翻出来,全都是因为它的动画原声。看动画的时候,就已经为DN的音乐惊讶过一回。首先OP和ED都是重金属嚎叫类,当即得出日本的Anime果然不是给小孩看的结论。当然最吸引我的,是配乐中出现的吉他摇滚,电子,甚至后摇的部分,这和印象中传统原声中J-Pop, J-Rock, 或者成篇的交响乐有很大不同。Death Note Original Soundtrack 分为I, II, III辑,每辑都包括近30首的原声。不到40集的动画有如此大规模的原声匹配,可见制作的雄心和DN的魅力。其中I是我认为最出色,也最有代表性的一张。其实所有的原声幕后推手只有两个人:比较出名的Yoshihisa Hirano,走悲壮的交响乐路线,其中还夹杂着类似Gregorian chant的咏唱;比较不出名的Taniuchi Hideki,一只J-Rock乐队Shocking Lemon的成员,但惊艳之处就在这里。他没有把日本流行音乐标志性的guitar solo或是trance beat嫁接给DN, 取而代之的是piano与电子亦或是Post-Rock/Experimental的完美结合。DN与众不同的题材和浓重的残酷灰暗色调,先天性地决定了与夸张的着色和写实(超现实?)画风所匹配的只能是狂放残酷的基因。拿Soundtrack I的前四曲为例,曲子的层次都不复杂,这反而衬托出每每撕裂的吉他轰鸣声带来的莫名孤寂和痛苦。这四曲为整个原声定下了一个基调,用一个黑色的牢笼,把聆听者禁锢在一个由Kira统治的世界里,欲出无门。当然独乐乐不如众乐乐,Yoshihisa Hirano的存在也是一种必然,使曲风得到了极大的丰富。

I See Colours

本来想把标题弄得悲壮一点,来个什么“病榻上的思考”,后来想想未免太悲情,再者真正在病床上的时间,难受都来不及,根本顾不上什么思考,只好作罢。

印象当中,上一次住院还是小学二年级的时候。当时在医院当了一个月的常住人口,弄得走的时候还有点舍不得。从那之后一直很满意自己的健康状况,虽然不擅长什么其它的运动,但乒乓球一直在坚持。极度怀念本科那三年混迹乒乓球队的日子,整天琢磨着怎么打败church老爷爷,甚是有趣。去到伦敦之后,没有了省吾-san做对手,我也只好去黑人遍布的小公园里跑圈,这个我最不擅长,效果也就可想而知了。总之,加上回国这段时间不间断地给祖国公路铁路航空事业不间断地做出贡献之后,我也就躺到了医院走廊的的病床上。

感谢在扬州和广州照顾我的亲人们,如果我是病在伦敦,估计这次就翘掉了。特别是那一晚,当针孔直入血管,立刻胸闷无比眩晕一片,眼前彩色的世界瞬间变成了白色的,感觉就像电影里的慢镜头,你慢慢地倒下,旁边的人焦急地喊着你的名字但你怎么也听不见,一切都十分逼真。估计唯一的区别是,电影里的人倒下得特别慢,然后腿还抖两抖。

我身体造反的时候,世界也没闲着。一年前在LSE里闭着眼睛指一个人十有八九都是一准投行潜力股,现在估计没有人还敢去碰这雷区了。Lehman Brothers和Merrill Lynch瞬间倒掉,加上之前还算幸运的Bear Stearns,不可一世的五大投行只剩其二,而且也都开始转型。多的我就不说了,什么“论XX的倒掉”, “XX危机大揭秘”之类文章杂志书籍早就横行于世,连街边的大爷嘴边都挂着雷曼美林,不得不感叹时代的发展。

很久没有更新了,就胡乱写了一通,看来我还烧着呢。

Love Is A Mixtape

What is a mixtape?

A mixtape is a compilation of songs recorded in a specific order, traditionally onto a compact audio cassette. A mixtape, which usually reflects the musical tastes of its compiler, can range from a casually selected list of favorite songs, to a conceptual mix of songs linked by a theme or mood, to a highly personal statement tailored to the tape's intended recipient (From Wikipedia).

I made myself the first mixtape using my parents’ massive old style Hi-Fi system at home, when I was 16. Now looking back, really want to give a laugh about how I did it. By using the cassette machine’s live recording function, audio was recorded in real time when the CD player played songs, and I paused the tape and changed CD after each song. Can’t remember why I did it and what songs I compiled, only the sense of satisfaction and electrification left in my brain.

Nowadays, an era even compact disc diminishes, there is no room available for cassette. But it won’t be an obstacle stopping us from making personal mixtape. Well, we likely do it online then.

I have been introducing music here for a while now but rarely provide actual music for listening pleasure. So here we are.

Styrofoam + Death Cab For Cutie @ Carling Academy Brixton




对于Indie Electronic的理解,源于2004年Styrofoam在Morr Music发行的《Nothing’s Lost》。前有Alias和Lali Puna的Valerie Trebeljahr开场,后有Death Cab For Cutie的Ben Gibbard和The American Analog Set的Andrew Kenny坐镇,那张群星璀璨的专辑可谓好不热闹。有人质疑Styrofoam的江郎才尽,不得不找来一大班好友来撑场面。其实恰恰相反,众人鲜活各异的嗓音与Styrofoam独特略带悲伤气质的电子音符恰好呈现出一幅幅绚丽的画卷。时隔四年(暂且忽略06年与Fat Jon的collaboration),Styrofoam推出了加盟大场Nettwerk后的第一张专辑《A Thousand Words》。同样强大的客籍阵容(只是我都不认识罢了),更加流行的曲风,和渐渐占据主动的vocal,都印证着Styrofoam于Electronic Pop向的转变。起初对于其变化略有失望,但这和以往暗含悲情不同的音符,竟让每一次聆听后的愉悦增加一分,反复播放后带给我的竟是一个不多见的阳光夏日。因此当看到Styrofoam于七月作为Death Cab For Cutie英国巡演的开场时,难免有些激动。

《Narrow Stairs》已经是Death Cab For Cutie发行的第六张专辑了。经历了上一张专辑《Plans》商业和名气上的巨大成功,这张新专辑也就格外令人注目。好在DCFC没有被Grammy提名冲昏了头脑,变成主流清新口水情歌乐队。取而代之的是一张异于往常,凝聚忧虑和黯淡色彩的专辑。其实在我心中Ben一直都具有这样的气质 ---- 一个戴着夸张大框眼镜的文艺青年形象,一个明亮清脆动人的嗓音,带着藏在暗处的淡淡哀愁。这一点倒是DCFC和Styrofoam共有的特质。没有绝对的悲伤或者绝对的快乐,很多快乐实质是悲伤的,很多悲伤过后是会心的快乐。两者同台献艺,绝妙的组合。

伦敦的音乐版图很广阔,但好像并没有给除了英美以外的他国乐手留下多少空间。上千的人潮中,为Styrofoam而来的屈指可数,可能除了我就剩下几个比利时爱国青年了。我也低估了DCFC的知名度,在演出前一个多小时冲到Carling Academy Brixton,竟然已经有两三百人早早在门口排队了,我的前排计划就这样黯然失败。八点刚过,Styrofoam准时出现,''Hello London, we are Styrofoam from a tiny country called Belgium''。一句简单的开场白之后,响起了可以让我闭上眼睛微笑着倾听的声音。虽然可能调音师还在热身,灯光师还没有赶来,但不完美的音效和发呆的灯光正好衬托出Styrofoam的热情。在《After Sunset》的旋律中,抱着吉他穿格子衬衫舞动的Arne Van Petegem (除了演出时,Styrofoam基本上就是他一个人的乐队),快乐得像个孩子。也难怪,看看新专辑的封面,他不正抱着一只巨大的玩具熊吗?

本来没有对DCFC抱有太高的期望,因为太甜是会腻的。不过在Ben的嗓音和Chris Walla的吉他声响交织下,《Transatlanticism》,《Soul Meets Body》,《I Will Possess Your Heart》这贯穿近几张专辑的曲目,引导思绪不断浮现倾听当时的人,情,事,物。作为无数独立摇滚乐队中挑选出来的绝对幸运者,DCFC是非常谦逊的,他们无时无刻不对到场的歌迷们表示着感谢。感谢,被清澈天真的音乐传达出去;感谢,被热情激动呼喊舞动反馈回来。''I need you so much closer, I need you so much closer…''一切在蓝色的月光中结束,一切被歌声融化,温暖地。

Then we forget trees are green, birds sing, morning glory blossoms, and warm water run through the red bridge. Life is not easy; it is a verity never understood when we were at kindergarten. My Bloody Valentine

一般情况下每听完一场concert我都会有意无意遗忘那支乐队一段时间,因为演出高潮过后肯定需要一段时间去平静。不过这次例外。趁着耳膜还带着前夜噪音的余味,赶紧重温一下血腥情人节的浪漫,虽然,现在是六月。

天才大多都沉浸在自己的世界里。Kevin Shields就是这样一个追求完美的自闭天才。作为My Bloody Valentine的主脑,他创造了一张让无数乐队和歌迷顶礼膜拜的神作,Loveless (1991);但也同样是他对吉他噪音和制作质量的无限追求(耗时两年和传说中的25万镑制作费)让老东家Creation差点倒闭。就像武林中的高人,MBV在登峰造极之后就销声匿迹了。从此,人们开始漫长的等待。虽然Shields说一定还会有MBV出品,但始终是捕风捉影。 一等就是16年。直到2007年的某一天,Shields宣布从1996年开始录制的第三张专辑已经完成3/4;MBV宣布2008年的英国巡演和festival appearance。

记得拥有MBV的第一张专辑是很久前10元盗版的Loveless,不过那时处于广泛吸收营养的无知阶段。真正开始了解并迷恋是起源于6年前刚到Norwich时一个英国室友的大力推荐,不过也从来没有想过能有机会一睹他们现场的风采。那是一种奢望。

欲之则不开,忘之花却开。13年后reunion的首次现场,便是在Camden Town附近的Roundhouse连续五场。即使这样,门票也是N个月前就全部sold out。不过正逢阳光夏日周末,又有志同道合朋友相伴,便决定到门口去碰碰运气,结果就第一次这样跟黄牛同流合污了。

Roundhouse不同于伦敦大多数酒吧式场馆,也不是历史悠久的改装歌剧院,它更像是一个圆顶的室内体育场,适合大气的声音无限碰撞。从Only Shallow第一个吉他音符的瞬间开始,所有的人不由自主地闭上眼睛,自然地跟着震人心魄的音乐摇摆,然后开始缓缓地飘向空中,奔向一个由guitar distortion, pitch blending, and digital reverb创造的五彩缤纷异样世界。作为shoegazer的鼻祖,Shields和Bilinda Butcher (Female vocal/Guitar)骨风依旧,无论从琴弦散发出的声音多激动,无论台下的观众多亢奋,除了低头旁若无人地弹琴和歌唱,丝毫不见一个多余的动作。一个半小时的时间里,他们回顾了包括前两张专辑和EP在内的众多曲目。除了Loveless里的作品让人热血沸腾之外,ending那首长达20分钟的纯噪音曲,似乎展示着MBV仍旧年轻,同时也提醒着人们美丽的玫瑰背后也有带刺的一面。

很快,Loveless和Isn’t Anything会发行Shields重新混音版本,希望新专辑也有一天能发行。不期望它能带来多大的惊喜,Loveless已经足够而且无法超越。

My Bloody Valentine创造的,是一个红色真空的滴血玫瑰花园。所谓血色浪漫,便是如此吧。









Maybeshewill

终于迎来六月的阳光,即使是短暂的,但也很温暖美好。这种时候,Maybeshewill流畅的音符充斥着耳畔。

师夷长技以制夷。用在Maybeshewill身上并不是那么贴切,不过表明了我对于这支过去默默无闻乐队的信心。向他人学习借鉴技术和经验而据为己用并不是坏事,关键在于借鉴过来之后怎么运用。简单的堆砌拼凑和深思熟虑后的重组再创造当然不可混为一谈。很幸运在他们刚发行debut的不久就听到这张专辑,起初的随便听听倒是成为了今年到目前为止的最大惊喜。2006年的65daysofstatic换成了如今的Maybeshewill。你看,连名字都有这样的相似,也难怪我的联想。你要是告诉我这是一张65days两年前偷偷录制没有发行的专辑,我一定深信无疑。一切都是那么的相似,动听的吉他,流畅的钢琴,跳动的电音,紧凑的构架,一个被冠予post-post-rock虚名的genre。有趣的是两支乐队所在的Sheffield 和Leicester 距离非常近,但是在Maybeshewill列出的influence名单里并没有看到65days的名字。后摇需要时间的铺陈才能显现高潮的澎湃,但总会有人跳出这个框框。说实话我还是喜欢传统后摇的风格,因为那是其一切精髓所在。Maybeshewill和65days无疑是改革的成功者,虽然他们并不成熟而且前路并不平坦。

‘Not For Want Of Trying’, 10首曲目一气呵成,短短的30多分钟无疑是一次精神的洗礼。总觉得骨子里Maybeshewill带着点悲情忧郁,也许是后摇一贯的气质所致。但我的听觉感受总是充满动力的,激动人心的;即使在他们常用的film quote里,一个激动的声音倾诉着,‘everybody knows things are too bad. It’s depression. Everybody’s out work or scared of losing their job. Dollar buyers are getting millions of worth…Banks are going bust. Shopkeeper keeps a gun under the counter. Punks are running wildly on the street. There’s nobody anywhere seems to know what to do and there’s no end to it. We know, the air is unfit to breath; our food is unfit to eat. We are sick to watch our TV…If that’s the things they are supposed to be. We know things perhaps are worse than bad. They’re crazy. It’s like everything everywhere is going crazy, so we don’t go out anymore……’ 末世悲情?倒也未必。只是他们也想用自己的方式对这个近乎疯狂的世界进行审视。Credit crunch, market turmoil, oil and food price increase, inflation, earthquake, is there an end to it?

乱世出英雄,挑战带来的是无限机遇。

Last night something happened

伦敦的天气,让人永远也捉摸不透。六月的天空,仍旧阴雨绵绵,压抑得让人透不过气来。人们的思绪,也像天空中飘零的雨点一样在潮湿的空气中翻腾。

也许,我们需要一些能抓得住重点的声音。此时此景,那声音一定是微笑里带着悲伤的。

Monster Movie一定能明白伦敦的心情,否则很难想象他们能谱写出如此应情应景的音乐。组建于2000年的Monster Movie, 在2002初发行了第一张专辑《Last Night Something Happened》。曾经看过一遍关于大爱的德国独立电子(现在的方向开始改变了)厂牌Morr Music的文章,从中得知Slowdive对他们发展的深厚影响。不过要讲究正门子嗣,Monster Movie才是第一皇子。撇开Slowdive原始成员Christian Savill不谈,于音乐于意境,两者是一脉相承的。整张专辑简洁干练,短短的38分钟让人欲罢不能,不知不觉又按下了Replay。从My Bloody Valentine开始,shoegazer们的吉他噪音声墙早就不知让多少带着伤感的和梦想的少年在音乐中迷失,继而在音乐中奋起。Monster Movie也许在走着同样的道路,用那孤芳自赏的吉他,用那男女相承盘旋而上缥缈的歌声,用那轻描淡写的电子音符。(这张Debut在2006年被Clairecords再版,多了一首新歌和一个略有不同的sleeve cover。上面的是2002年原始版本的封面,我也更喜欢。)

他们喜欢唱歌给悲伤但有梦想的人听,在潮湿孤寂的夜空中。“I, don’t know why, I’ll keep waiting…”

习惯是可怕的。尤其是坏习惯,不声不息地来,完美得一点也不留痕迹。当你自以为早已博览群书怀抱美人之时,殊不知正是被嗤之以鼻之时。听音乐也是一样的道理。在某个角落,一定藏着动听的声音。在这个地理世界经济世界我的世界都在波动的时候,重拾了一些久违的感动,听音乐的感动。一个是来自瑞典,做着最传统也最抓住精髓的后摇的EF;一个是来自日本,用低调的钢琴和电子声响渲染空气的Motoro Faam。两张同样出自零六年的作品,陪伴我度过一段难忘的时光。学会感恩,学会珍惜。
